How SLPs Support Reading & Writing
Reading and writing are language tasks — built on the same oral language skills that Speech-Language Pathologists are uniquely trained to assess and treat. Difficulties in any of the underlying systems (phonological awareness, vocabulary, grammar, narrative) can show up as struggles with literacy.
Common literacy concerns we address include:
- Decoding:Â Sounding out unfamiliar words.
- Reading fluency:Â Reading accurately, smoothly, and at a reasonable pace.
- Reading comprehension:Â Understanding what was read.
- Spelling:Â Mapping sounds to letters accurately.
- Written expression:Â Putting ideas into clear, organized sentences and paragraphs.
Â
For many children, reading difficulties have roots in earlier-developing skills like phonological awareness. We assess the full system and target the most impactful underlying skills.
Signs of literacy struggle
- Slow, laborious sounding-out
- Frequent guessing from pictures or context
- Avoids reading aloud
- Spelling looks random or phonetic ("lik" for "like")
- Trouble with multisyllabic words
- Comprehension drops on longer texts
- Writing is short, disorganized, or avoided
