How SLPs Support Reading & Writing

Reading and writing are language tasks — built on the same oral language skills that Speech-Language Pathologists are uniquely trained to assess and treat. Difficulties in any of the underlying systems (phonological awareness, vocabulary, grammar, narrative) can show up as struggles with literacy.

Common literacy concerns we address include:

  • Decoding: Sounding out unfamiliar words.
  • Reading fluency: Reading accurately, smoothly, and at a reasonable pace.
  • Reading comprehension: Understanding what was read.
  • Spelling: Mapping sounds to letters accurately.
  • Written expression: Putting ideas into clear, organized sentences and paragraphs.

For many children, reading difficulties have roots in earlier-developing skills like phonological awareness. We assess the full system and target the most impactful underlying skills.

Know the Signs

When to Seek Literacy Support

Don’t wait for your child to “fall further behind.” Research is clear that early, structured intervention is the most effective:

Junior/Senior Kindergarten: Difficulty learning letter names and sounds, can't hear rhymes, can't blend sounds.

Grade 1: Behind peers in reading early texts, frustration with reading, can't sound out simple words.

Grade 2–3: Reading is slow and effortful, spelling is significantly behind, comprehension drops on longer texts.

Grade 4+: Avoids reading, struggles with content-area textbooks, written work doesn't match verbal ability.

Note: If your child has been flagged at school, or if reading has become a daily battle, an SLP literacy assessment can clarify what’s underneath the struggle and what to do about it.

Heard From Ottawa Families

“Grade 2 was a disaster. We started with Vitality’s SLP after a school recommendation, and by the end of grade 3 our son was reading on grade level and starting to enjoy books. We can’t overstate what that means.”

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

There is overlap, but a Speech-Language Pathologist diagnoses the underlying language and processing weaknesses driving literacy struggles, then targets them directly. Many tutors deliver good packaged programs; SLPs add diagnostic depth, especially when standard tutoring hasn’t produced enough gains.
In Ontario, formal dyslexia diagnosis is generally provided by psychologists. SLPs identify and treat the phonological and language-based weaknesses that underlie most dyslexia profiles, and we frequently work alongside psychologists.
Yes. Written expression difficulties are common and often relate to underlying language skills (vocabulary, sentence structure, narrative organization). We assess and treat written language difficulties as part of our literacy support.
Highly variable. Some children make rapid gains in 4–6 months; others with more significant profiles benefit from longer-term support. We review progress every few months and adjust the plan accordingly.
