Common reasons families reach out

Phonological awareness is the bedrock of reading — the ability to hear, identify, and manipulate the sounds in words. When it’s weak, learning to read is harder. When it’s strong, reading clicks.

Understanding the Concern

What Is Phonological Awareness?

Phonological awareness is the ability to hear and play with the sound structure of language — separate from meaning. It includes skills like rhyming, breaking words into syllables, identifying the first sound of a word, and blending sounds together to make a word.

It’s one of the strongest predictors of later reading ability. Research consistently shows that children with weak phonological awareness in kindergarten are at high risk for reading difficulties — and that targeted intervention works.

Phonological awareness is not the same as letter knowledge. A child can recognize letters but still struggle to hear that “cat” starts with the /k/ sound, or that “sun” and “fun” rhyme. Both skills matter, and both can be taught.

Know the Signs

When to Get a Phonological Awareness Assessment

These are the most common warning signs in preschool and early elementary:

Preschool: Doesn't enjoy or notice rhymes, can't clap out syllables, can't identify the first sound of a word.

Kindergarten: Trouble learning letter names and sounds, can't blend simple sounds together (/c/-/a/-/t/ = cat), confuses similar-looking letters (b/d, p/q).

Grade 1: Slow, laborious sounding-out, frequent guessing from pictures, can't spell phonetically (writes "lk" for "like").

Grade 2+: Reads slowly, avoids reading, weak spelling, difficulty with multisyllabic words.

Note: Phonological awareness difficulties often co-occur with — but are different from — articulation issues. We assess both and can address them together when needed.

How We Help

Our Approach to Phonological Awareness Therapy

Structured, sequential, and grounded in the science of reading.

01

Skill Assessment

We test where your child sits on the phonological awareness continuum — from rhyme through to phoneme manipulation — and identify exactly which skills to build first.

02

Sequential Skill Building

Therapy follows a developmental progression: rhyme → syllables → onset-rime → individual sounds (phonemes). We move at your child’s pace, mastering each step before advancing.
03

Sound-Letter Links

For school-aged children, we explicitly connect sounds to the letters that represent them — bridging phonological awareness with decoding and spelling.
04

Home Practice

We give you short, playful activities — rhyming games in the car, syllable claps at dinner, sound hunts during bath time — that fit naturally into family life.

Heard From Ottawa Families

“By the end of senior kindergarten our daughter still couldn’t hear rhymes. After three months of weekly sessions she was sounding out words and reading her first books. The change was dramatic.” — Parent of a 6-year-old, Greely

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

It depends on the broader picture. Many children enter JK with limited letter knowledge and pick it up quickly. If your child also can’t hear rhymes, can’t clap syllables, or doesn’t notice initial sounds, an assessment is worth doing. Early support is far more effective than waiting until grade 2.
A Speech-Language Pathologist works at the level of the auditory and language system underlying reading. We diagnose specific underlying weaknesses, where a tutor typically delivers a packaged program. For children with significant difficulty, SLP intervention is often a more targeted starting point.
SLPs in Ontario don’t formally diagnose dyslexia — that’s typically a psychologist’s scope. But we can identify and treat the phonological processing weaknesses that underlie most cases of dyslexia, often working alongside psychologists or learning specialists.
Yes. Many older struggling readers still have underlying phonological weaknesses that were never addressed. We adapt activities to be age-appropriate and integrate them with reading and spelling work.
