Understanding the Concern

Understanding Language Delays & Disorders

Language is more than just speech sounds — it’s the ability to understand and use words and sentences to share meaning. Concerns can show up in two main areas:

Expressive language is what your child says — their vocabulary, sentence length, grammar, and ability to tell stories or share ideas.

Receptive language is what your child understands — following directions, answering questions, and grasping the meaning of what others say.

A child can have difficulty in one area, the other, or both. A “late talker” is a toddler with limited expressive language but typical understanding. A child with a more significant Developmental Language Disorder (DLD) may have ongoing challenges that affect school, friendships, and self-esteem if not supported.

Know the Signs

When to Get a Language Assessment

Early intervention has the strongest evidence base in pediatric speech-language pathology. Watch for these red flags:

By 12 months:Not babbling, not using gestures (waving, pointing), not responding to their name.

By 18 months: Fewer than 10 words, not following simple directions like "give me the ball."

By 2 years: Fewer than 50 words, not combining two words ("more juice," "daddy go").

By 3 years: Strangers can't understand most of what they say, not using simple sentences.

School age: Trouble understanding stories, answering questions, following multi-step directions, or expressing ideas clearly.

Note: “Wait and see” is rarely the right answer when a child is significantly behind peers. Early intervention is more effective and less intensive than later remediation.

How We Help

Our Approach to Language Therapy

Goals matched to your child’s level — from first words to complex narrative skills.

01

Comprehensive Assessment

Standardized testing combined with parent interview, play observation, and language sampling. We look at understanding, expression, and social use of language.

02

Functional Goals

We target what matters most for your child’s daily life — requesting needs, joining play, participating at daycare, following classroom directions, or telling complete stories.
03

Play-Based Therapy

For young children, therapy looks like play — because play is how language develops. For older children, structured activities target grammar, vocabulary, narrative, and inferencing.
04

Parent Coaching

You’re your child’s most important language teacher. We coach you on how to model, expand, and respond to language during everyday routines.

Heard From Ottawa Families

“At her 2-year check we were told to wait. We didn’t — and at 3, after 6 months of therapy and parent coaching, she was telling us full stories. Wish we had started sooner.” — Parent of a 3-year-old, Barrhaven

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Some “late talkers” do catch up on their own (often called “late bloomers”), but research shows we cannot reliably predict who will. The risk of waiting is that gaps widen. Even if your child is likely to catch up, parent coaching gives them every advantage and costs nothing in development.
A delay implies the child is on the same developmental path, just slower. DLD is a persistent language difficulty that’s not explained by another condition (like hearing loss or autism), and typically continues to need support throughout childhood. Assessment helps clarify which picture fits.
Yes. Language difficulties in school-aged children often show up as trouble following directions, weak narrative skills, vocabulary gaps, and difficulty with reading comprehension. We assess and treat across the full age range.
Talking more is great — and we encourage it. But language therapy uses specific evidence-based techniques (modeling, expansions, recasts, focused stimulation) targeted at your child’s exact level. We also teach you those techniques so home and therapy work together.
