About this service

Fine & Gross Motor Skills Therapy

Motor skills are the foundation for almost everything a child does — holding a pencil, doing up buttons, climbing at the park, catching a ball, and keeping up with classmates. When fine motor (small, precise movements) or gross motor (large, whole-body movements) skills lag behind, children can feel frustrated, avoid certain activities, or fall behind at school.

Our occupational therapist assesses the building blocks underneath the difficulty — grip and hand strength, core stability, coordination, and motor planning — then builds a playful program that targets the right level for your child. Progress is measured against real goals like legible handwriting or independent dressing, not vague benchmarks.

Our approach

How we help

Every plan is tailored to your child’s goals, delivered through play-based sessions, and built to carry over into daily life.

01

Find the root cause

We assess whether the difficulty stems from strength, stability, coordination, or motor planning — so we target the cause, not just the symptom.

02

Build skills through play

Graded, game-based activities make practice fun while steadily challenging the skills your child needs to develop.
03

Make it functional

We tie therapy to real goals: legible handwriting, doing up a coat, or keeping up in gym class.
04

Coach home and school

You and your child’s teachers get simple strategies and adaptations so progress continues between sessions.

Questions, answered

Frequently Asked Questions

Often, yes. Handwriting depends on hand strength, grip, posture, visual-motor skills, and attention. An occupational therapist can pinpoint which of these is getting in the way and target it directly, rather than simply asking your child to “practise more.”
Fine motor skills involve small, precise movements of the hands and fingers — writing, cutting, fastening buttons. Gross motor skills involve large, whole-body movements — running, jumping, climbing, balancing. Many children benefit from support in both areas.
It depends on your child’s goals and starting point. Some families notice changes within a handful of sessions; others work toward longer-term goals. Your therapist will set measurable targets and review progress with you regularly.
