Common reasons families reach out

Childhood Apraxia of Speech is a motor planning disorder — your child knows what they want to say, but their brain has trouble coordinating the precise movements to say it. Specialized, evidence-based treatment makes a real difference.

Understanding the Concern

What Is Childhood Apraxia of Speech?

Childhood Apraxia of Speech (CAS) is a motor speech disorder in which a child has difficulty planning and coordinating the precise movements needed for speech — even though there’s nothing wrong with the muscles themselves.

CAS is different from articulation or phonological disorders. The hallmark feature is inconsistency — your child might say a word three different ways in three minutes. They may also have visible struggle, “groping” mouth movements, and unusual prosody (the rhythm and stress of speech).

CAS is relatively rare, and a true diagnosis requires careful assessment. Many children referred with suspected CAS actually have severe phonological disorders — the treatment approach differs significantly between the two.

Know the Signs

CAS Requires Specialized Treatment

Standard articulation therapy is not enough for true CAS. Effective treatment uses motor learning principles:

High frequency: Multiple short therapy sessions per week generally outperform one long session.

Mass practice: Many repetitions of a small target set, with variability built in.

Multimodal cueing: Visual, tactile, and auditory cues to help the child plan the movement (PROMPT-informed approaches, Dynamic Temporal and Tactile Cueing).

Functional words first: Targeting words your child needs daily, not random sound lists.

Family involvement: Parent practice between sessions is essential — we coach you on how.

Note: If your child has been diagnosed with CAS — or if you suspect it based on the hallmark features above — book an assessment so we can build a treatment plan grounded in motor learning research.

How We Help

Our Approach to CAS Therapy

Specialized, intensive, and family-centred motor speech therapy.

01

Differential Assessment

We confirm whether features are consistent with CAS, severe phonological disorder, or both — because treatment paths differ. The assessment also identifies your child’s functional vocabulary priorities.

02

Motor-Based Treatment Plan

A structured plan using evidence-based approaches like Dynamic Temporal and Tactile Cueing (DTTC), PROMPT-informed strategies, or integral stimulation, matched to your child’s profile.
03

High-Frequency Practice

Where possible, we recommend 2–3 sessions per week. We also coach you to lead short, daily practice at home, which is often more important than session frequency alone.
04

Family Coaching

You become an active part of the treatment team. We teach you the cues, the targets, and the principles, so progress continues every day.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

A late talker is delayed but typically progresses normally once words come. An articulation problem involves consistent errors on specific sounds. CAS is a motor planning issue — errors are inconsistent, the child often has limited sound inventories, and progress with standard therapy is slow.
A Speech-Language Pathologist with experience in motor speech disorders. Diagnosis is usually most reliable around age 3+, because younger children have so much developmental variability. We can assess and treat suspected CAS earlier with a “working diagnosis” approach.
Research supports higher-frequency therapy for CAS — typically 2–3 sessions per week, especially in the early stages. We work with families to find a sustainable schedule.
Most children with CAS make significant progress with appropriate therapy. Many go on to communicate effectively in school and beyond. Outcomes depend on severity, co-occurring conditions, and the consistency and intensity of treatment.
