Understanding the Concern
What Are Articulation & Phonological Disorders?
Articulation disorders involve difficulty physically producing specific speech sounds — like a child who consistently says “wabbit” instead of “rabbit,” or who can’t produce a clear “s” sound. The issue is at the level of the individual sound.
Phonological disorders involve patterns of sound errors — for example, a child who deletes the final consonant of every word (“ca” for “cat,” “do” for “dog”), or who replaces all back sounds with front sounds (“tat” for “cat,” “do” for “go”). The issue is rule-based and affects whole groups of sounds.
Both fall under the umbrella of speech sound disorders (SSD), and both respond very well to evidence-based therapy — especially when started early.
Common signs in children
- Substitutes one sound for another consistently
- Drops sounds at the start or end of words
- Distorts sounds (a "slushy" or lateral lisp)
- Strangers, teachers, or peers struggle to understand them
- Frustration when not understood
- Avoiding speaking in groups

By age 5: "L," "y," and most blends are emerging. Your child should be intelligible in connected speech.
